The Welsh Room

Victorian taxidermy originating from Wales

We decided to expand upon this collectors original pages on this site as he has expanded his collection that now includes over 1000 cases of birds and mammals. Of particular interest is taxiderm that originates from Wales, namely James Hutchings and Thomas Jefferies. This collection is housed in a converted barn, which most normal people would gladly call home. It is a temprature controlled exhibit hall with little or no natural light. The reason for naming the page as we have is that the collection contained here is predominantly the work of James Hutchings. Detailed images of a selection of cases can also be found below.

barrybarn.jpg
Victorian Foxes by James Hutchings. A sample of some of the 40 cased foxes on display here in this room. The differentiator for most of the Fox cases is the prey items. However it is also interesting to view the subtle changes in style over the significant period during which these cases were produced.

Enclosed below are some additional images of this collection. Also on this page will be works from, but not exclusively Hine, Hibbs, TE Gunn, Spicer, Pratt, Gardner and of course modern examples of some of today's best taxidermists. We hope you enjoy the images. We are also always intereted in purchasing similar items so please respond via the internet connection detailed below.

It is interesting to note that even after 100 plus years these cases are so well constructed that they can be stacked easily Most case were either produced in Oak, quality pine and Mahogany.
